This was a school project in which we made a book out of reading materials from the first sememster of sophmore year. As for the text, I chose the debate between Tibor Kalman and Joe Duffy. It talks about art and commerce and how they relate and contradict each other. I referenced the red and blue pill from the Matrix as a metaphor for on one hand, making aethetic things and being ignorant, on the other hand, designing to adress social issues and creating things you dont enjoy aetheitcally.
For the other reading material, I used “the secret sense of Japanese magazine design” which is a book that got me into graphic design. Many Japanese designers talk about the process and their carrier. Interestingly, there’s not much talk about politics but a lot about hangouts and getting dunk with their cowerkers. Maybe true freedom in design lies in being ignorant about the social impact but having fun. Then again, Japanese design industry is super misogynist.
